About Tony Erwin

I’m a technology leader and architect with a passion for building innovative systems at the intersection of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and enterprise software engineering.

Current Focus

My current work centers on:

  • AI & Agentic Systems: Designing and implementing intelligent agent architectures, multi-agent systems, and AI-powered automation platforms
  • Cloud Architecture: Building scalable, resilient cloud-native applications and microservices
  • Enterprise AI: Applying AI/ML technologies to solve real-world business problems at scale
  • Technical Leadership: Mentoring teams and driving architectural decisions for complex systems

Background

I’m a Senior Technical Staff Member (STSM) at IBM with 25+ years of experience architecting enterprise software at scale — from early-career infrastructure tooling to cloud platforms to the agentic AI systems I’m building today. Throughout, my focus has been the same: building platforms that other engineers and organizations build on top of.

Today that means AI. I lead agentic AI architecture within IBM’s Technology Lifecycle Services organization — building the platforms, developer frameworks, and governance standards that help large organizations move from AI experimentation to production. I took the TLS Agentic Platform from a six-week proof-of-concept to a production multi-agent system, and created the Infrastructure Agent Utilities — a Python library for LangGraph/MCP agents that’s now evolving into a formal inner source project across IBM.

Before that, I spent six years as lead architect for IBM Cloud’s primary management console — leading a distributed global team through a full microservices migration, a major infrastructure overhaul that achieved 99.98% availability, and the project that unified IBM’s cloud platforms into a single experience. I then moved into financial services as a senior architect for IBM Cloud for Financial Services — driving compliance frameworks, security controls, and reference architectures that financial institutions use to demonstrate regulatory readiness, and leading the first public release of IBM’s financial services reference architectures.

Technical Interests

  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: Large language models, agentic systems, prompt engineering, RAG architectures
  • Cloud & Microservices: Kubernetes, serverless, distributed systems, API design
  • Modern Web Development: Node.js, React, TypeScript, micro-frontends
  • Software Architecture: Design patterns, system design, scalability, resilience
  • Developer Experience: Tools and practices that make developers more productive

Writing & Speaking

I write about technical topics to share knowledge and lessons learned from building large-scale systems. My posts cover everything from practical implementation details to high-level architectural patterns, with a recent focus on AI and agentic systems.
